Sony Xperia Screen Repair Guide

How to repair a broken Sony Xperia screen: diagnosing cracks and black screens, choosing the right screen for your model, what it costs, the tools and steps involved, and when to use a professional.

By the E-Tech61 team, Manchester 9 min read

A broken Sony Xperia screen can usually be fixed by replacing the display assembly, the combined screen and touch layer, with a part made for your exact model. Replacement screens for popular budget Xperia models such as the XA, XA1, E5 and L3 are inexpensive, from £10.52 to £20.00 in our store at the time of writing (15 October 2026), and the repair is achievable at home with basic tools and patience. Before buying a screen, though, make sure the screen is really the problem: a black display can also be caused by software, a loose connector or a damaged flex cable. The main qualification is that every Xperia model uses a different screen, so confirm your model first. This guide covers diagnosis, parts, costs, tools, repair steps and safety.

Is it the screen? Diagnose before you buy

Different symptoms point to different faults. Use this table to narrow down the cause.

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Cracked glass, image and touch fine Damaged front glass only Replace the screen assembly when convenient
Cracked glass with lines, spots or dead areas Damaged display panel Replace the screen assembly
Touch not working in some areas Damaged digitiser (touch layer) Replace the screen assembly
Black screen, phone still rings or vibrates Display failure, loose connector or flex cable Check connectors and flex before buying a screen
Black screen, no sound or vibration Flat battery, software or board fault Charge, force restart, then investigate further
Flickering after a drop Loose display connector or damaged panel Reseat the connector; replace if it persists

Why is my Sony Xperia screen black?

A black screen is one of the most common Xperia questions. Work through these steps before assuming the screen is dead:

  1. Charge it. Connect a known-good charger for at least 30 minutes. A completely flat battery can make the phone look dead.
  2. Force a restart. On many Xperia models, holding the power and volume up buttons together for several seconds forces a restart or shutdown. Check the method for your model.
  3. Listen and feel. Call the phone. If it rings or vibrates but the screen stays black, the display or its connection is the likely fault.
  4. Try safe mode. If the screen works intermittently, a faulty app may be the cause. Google explains how to boot into safe mode to rule out problem apps.
  5. Consider a reset. If the phone starts but behaves oddly, a factory reset may help, though it erases data. Google's factory reset guide explains the process.

If the phone clearly works but the display stays black, the screen, its connector or a flex cable is at fault. On some models, such as the Xperia XZ, the display connection runs through a flex cable shared with the charging port, so a damaged flex can cause display problems. That part is inexpensive:

Choosing the right Xperia screen

Confirm your model

Go to Settings > About phone, or check the label under the SIM tray on some models. Xperia names are similar but parts are not interchangeable: an XA, XA1, XA Ultra and XA2 all use different screens.

Screen assembly or glass only?

On modern Xperia phones, the glass, touch layer and display panel are bonded together. Replacing only the glass requires specialist equipment, so DIY repairs replace the whole screen assembly, sometimes called an LCD and digitiser assembly.

Check what is included

Some screens come with a frame, adhesive or small parts such as earpiece mesh; others are the bare assembly. Read the listing and buy adhesive separately if needed.

Quality

Choose a screen from a supplier that describes the part clearly and offers a warranty. Display quality, colour accuracy and touch response vary between suppliers.

How much is a Sony Xperia screen replacement?

For a DIY repair, the cost is the screen plus adhesive and any tools you need. For the budget models above, the screen is the main cost. A repair shop adds labour, so expect a higher total; prices vary by shop and model, so ask for an all-in quote and which screen quality they use. For older flagships such as the XZ Premium, screens are harder to find and repairs are more complex, so costs are typically higher.

Tools you need

  • Heat source: heat pad, heat gun on low, or hair dryer.
  • Suction handle and thin plastic opening picks.
  • Precision screwdrivers, usually small Phillips heads.
  • Spudger and tweezers.
  • Isopropyl alcohol for adhesive removal.
  • Replacement adhesive.
  • Packing tape to hold shattered glass together while you work.

How to replace an Xperia screen: overview

Xperia models differ: on some, the screen is removed from the front; on others, you open the back first to reach the display connector. Check a guide for your exact model, then follow this general process.

  1. Prepare. Back up if possible, discharge below about 25%, power off and remove the SIM tray.
  2. Tape cracked glass. Cover shattered glass with packing tape so it stays together and the suction handle can grip.
  3. Heat and open. Warm the edges evenly to soften adhesive, lift with a suction handle and work picks around the edges. Insert picks only a short distance to protect cables.
  4. Disconnect the battery. Before disconnecting the display, disconnect the battery to avoid damage.
  5. Disconnect and remove the old screen. Release the display flex connector and remove the screen.
  6. Transfer small parts. Move any earpiece mesh, sensors or brackets that are not included with the new screen.
  7. Clean the frame. Remove old adhesive and glass fragments so the new screen sits flat.
  8. Test before sealing. Connect the new screen and battery, power on and test display, touch, brightness and sensors.
  9. Seal. Apply new adhesive, reconnect, press the screen in place evenly and clamp gently while it sets.

After the repair

Check touch response across the whole screen, especially the edges and corners. Make a call to check the proximity sensor turns the screen off near your ear, and test the front camera and earpiece. If touch is unresponsive in one area or the screen sits raised, reopen the phone to check the connector and that no cable is trapped.

Protect the new screen with a screen protector made for your model; see our screen protectors.

Living with a cracked screen until you repair it

If you cannot repair the phone straight away, a few precautions keep it usable and reduce further damage. Cover the cracked area with a screen protector or clear packing tape so loose glass does not cut your fingers and fragments do not fall out. Avoid pressing hard on the cracked area, because pressure can spread cracks into the display layer underneath and turn a cosmetic fault into dead pixels or lost touch. Keep the phone away from moisture, as cracks let water reach the panel and connectors. Back up your photos and contacts now, in case the screen fails completely before you fix it, and note your screen lock pattern or PIN somewhere safe so you can unlock the phone after the repair.

Older Xperia flagships: XZ, XZ Premium and Z series

Searches for Xperia XZ and XZ Premium screens are common, but these phones are more demanding to repair than budget models. Many have glued glass backs and water-resistant construction, and their screens are bonded firmly into the frame. Replacement screens for older flagships can also be harder to find, and quality varies more between suppliers. If you own one of these models, check part availability in our Sony parts collection first, read a model-specific guide end to end, and consider whether a professional repair makes more sense. A failed DIY attempt on a bonded flagship screen can cost more than the repair itself.

For tablets in the Xperia Z range, the same principle applies: the larger bonded screens are delicate to remove, and a professional repair is often the safer route.

Water resistance

Some Xperia models were sold with water resistance ratings. Opening the phone breaks the factory seal, and new adhesive restores only partial protection. Treat a repaired phone as no longer reliably water resistant.

Safety and disposal

Disconnect the battery before working on the display, and never bend or puncture it. Dispose of broken screens and old parts at an electrical waste collection point; GOV.UK explains the rules for waste electrical and electronic equipment, and London Fire Brigade publishes lithium battery safety advice.

DIY or professional?

DIY suits budget Xperia models if you are patient and careful. Use a professional if you have a glued glass-back flagship, the battery looks swollen, you are not confident handling connectors, or the phone holds data you have not backed up.

Is it worth repairing an older Xperia?

Many older Xperia models no longer receive Android or security updates. For a phone used as a backup, a child's phone or for basic calls and messages, an inexpensive screen replacement can extend its life considerably. For banking or sensitive work, weigh the lack of updates against the repair cost.

Should you replace the battery at the same time?

Opening an Xperia to change the screen gives you access to the battery too. If the phone is several years old and battery life has been poor, replacing both in one session saves opening the phone twice and reduces the risk of damaging the new screen later. Order the battery and extra adhesive at the same time as the screen, and test both before sealing the phone. For models where the battery sits behind a glued back panel rather than the screen, check your guide before deciding, as combining the jobs may not save time.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a screen for the wrong model. Similar names, different parts.
  • Replacing the screen when the fault is the connector or flex cable. Diagnose first.
  • Not disconnecting the battery.
  • Inserting picks too deep and damaging cables.
  • Sealing before testing.
